Why do I have varicose veins?

Varicose veins are generally caused by weak or damaged vein walls and valves. If your vein walls and valves don’t work properly, your blood can’t flow correctly. This causes blood to collect in your legs, increasing the blood pressure in your veins. Eventually, this increased pressure leads to swollen, enlarged varicose veins. Genetics play a role in the development of varicose veins, and you are more likely to develop varicose veins if you are female. Other factors that may contribute to varicose veins include being overweight, having a job that requires you to stand for many hours, and old age.

What is Varithena?

Varithena is the trade name of a special micro-foam administered as part of ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a specialized treatment that involves the injection of a micro-foam, in this case Varithena, into saphenous veins.

The micro-foam replaces the blood in your diseased vein. This causes the vein to collapse, forcing your blood to flow into your healthy veins. Sclerotherapy improves both physical symptoms ns and the appearance of your skin.

A gentle, effective treatment

Varithena is minimally invasive and requires no surgery or incisions. Other benefits include:

  • Virtually pain free: Most patients don’t experience any pain during Varithena treatment. Only a few injections are required for each treatment.
  • Quick treatment: The procedure takes between 20-30 minutes and an hour to complete.
  • Well tolerated: Varithena micro-foam is easily absorbed and is more advanced than most other foams on the market.
  • Fast recovery: Downtime is minimal, with many patients able to resume normal activity immediately post-procedure

Your initial consultation

Many treatment options exist for varicose veins and other vein conditions. At NYBG Veins, we have years of experience in treating all kinds of vein issues. During your initial consultation, Dr. Ahn will ask you questions about your health condition, any symptoms, and what you hope you achieve with your treatment. No two patients are the same, and your treatment plan will be customized to suit your circumstances and goals perfectly.

Your Varithena treatment

Varithena treatment is an outpatient procedure. On the day of your procedure, you will arrive at NYBG Veins and will change into a gown or exam shorts. You will lay in a comfortable position on a table, and you will be able to listen to music or relax during the treatment.

Once your skin has been disinfected, your local anesthesia will be administered. Next, Dr. Ahn will inject Varithena micro-foam directly into your vein using a very fine needle under real time ultrasound guidance.

The micro-foam will cause the diseased vein to collapse, and your blood flow will shift into healthy veins instead. The entire procedure should take under 30 minutes, after which your leg will be wrapped in a bandage, and you will be able to go home.

Will I have to take time off to recover?

You should be able to go back to work on the same day as your treatment. You will need to wear your compression stockings for about one week. Dr. Ahn will give you detailed aftercare instructions which you should follow carefully.
