What is vein disease caused by?

An extremely common issue in American adults, vein disease is generally caused by damaged or weak vein walls or valves. Tiny valves in your veins work against gravity, pushing blood back up to your heart. When these valves become weak or damaged, they become inefficient, and blood begins to pool in your veins instead of traveling to the heart. This increases the blood pressure in your veins, causing them to swell and enlarge. Genetics play a role in the development of vein conditions, as do old age, obesity, pregnancy and standing for long periods of time.

What are the symptoms?

Vein conditions can cause symptoms both in terms of appearance and pains or discomforts. Varicose or spider veins tend to be very visible, as they are often bluish or purple in color. They can be large and bulging. Vein disease also causes other symptoms that can negatively impact your quality of life. These include:

  • Swelling in the legs (edema)
  • Heavy, aching legs
  • Dry and itchy skin
  • Throbbing or burning pains
  • Restless legs
  • Fatigue or cramping

How do you test for and diagnose vein disease?

During and following your initial consultation, Dr. Ahn will use ultrasound mapping evaluation to analyze your veins and identify the cause of your symptoms. He will also ask you questions regarding your symptoms, medical history, and your goals. Based on your information, Dr. Ahn will devise a treatment plan designed to achieve the best possible results for your unique circumstances and goals. A combination of treatments is often the most effective approach. If your vein disease is more severe, you may require a more extensive treatment plan. If your symptoms are mild, you may only require a few treatments.

What are my treatment options?

At NYBG Veins, all of our treatments are gentle, minimally invasive and require little to no downtime. In the past, the only effective treatments for vein issues were complex surgical procedures. With modern treatments, we can achieve the same results using much less invasive methods. Using state-of-the-art equipment, we can perform most of our treatments during your lunch break. Our treatments include:

  • Sclerotherapy: A treatment that involves injecting a special solution into the diseased vein. The solution causes the vein to collapse, rerouting your blood flow into nearby healthy veins.
  • Phlebectomy: Using small incisions, we can completely remove larger varicose veins, providing immediate and last relief.
  • Ablation: Laser or radiofrequency waves are used to heat up and destroy the damaged vein, after which it is absorbed and removed naturally by your body’s elimination processes.

Is treatment painful?

As our treatments are minimally invasive, they are performed as out-patient procedures and generally require only local anesthetics. Our treatments are virtually pain free. None of the treatments we offer at NYBG Veins require long recovery processes. Most of them can be performed in your lunch break, and you can go straight back to work once you are done. We will provide you with aftercare instructions to help avoid any complications.

Is vein disease dangerous?

Vein disease is progressive and worsens with time. If left untreated, it can cause complications such as ulcers, circulatory problems, and blood clots. The sooner you get treatment, the better your outcome will be. We recommend that you contact a specialist as soon as you notice symptoms of vein disease.
